Short, plain answers. Last updated 2 November 2026.
DataSorted is a planned web app that helps UK tradespeople and new small businesses keep their data protection paperwork in one place: a privacy notice, a record of the personal data they hold, a log of customer data requests, a breach log and reminders. It is not launched yet; you can join the free waitlist.
Sole traders, tradespeople (builders, electricians, plumbers, cleaners, gardeners and similar) and new UK small businesses with only a few staff, who hold customer names, phone numbers and addresses and want a simple way to keep on top of data protection on their phone.
The planned price is £15 a month. It is not final and nothing is being charged now. Joining the waitlist is free and does not commit you to anything.
No. DataSorted is an independent private business. It is not affiliated with, approved by or endorsed by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) or the UK government.
Yes, much of it. The ICO offers free guidance, a privacy notice generator, a self-assessment for small businesses and sole traders, a fee self-assessment and free training. DataSorted is for people who would rather have everything kept in one place on their phone, with logs and reminders. See the comparison page.
Many businesses that handle personal data must pay a yearly fee to the ICO, but some are exempt. The ICO's own fee self-assessment on ico.org.uk tells you. Since 17 February 2025 the fee is £52 (tier 1), £78 (tier 2) or £3,763 (tier 3), with £5 off if you pay by direct debit. Pay the ICO directly. DataSorted never collects the fee.
No. DataSorted is an organising tool. It does not give legal advice and cannot guarantee that your business complies with the law. For advice about your situation, speak to a solicitor.
It does not register you with the ICO, collect or pay the ICO fee for you, give legal advice, act as your data protection officer, guarantee compliance, or cover complex cases such as large-scale CCTV, health data or marketing lists. It will not be suitable for larger organisations.
It lets you record what happened, when you found out, and what you did. A timer shows how long is left of the 72 hours the UK GDPR gives you to report a notifiable breach to the ICO, and links to the ICO's own breach guidance. You decide whether to report.
When a customer asks what personal data you hold about them, you log it and DataSorted reminds you before the usual one-month deadline to reply.
No. It is at the waitlist stage while we check there is enough demand to build it. If not enough people sign up, we will not build it, we will tell everyone on the waitlist, and we will delete the list.
Your sign-up is saved. We will email you once: when DataSorted opens, or when the test ends if we decide not to build it. We do not sell or share it for marketing. We delete it at launch, if we decide not to build DataSorted, or after 12 months at most, or sooner if you ask. You can ask to be removed at any time by writing to Peter Colburn at Bartle House, 9 Oxford Court, Manchester M2 3WQ. See the privacy notice.
DataSorted is run by Peter Colburn, a sole trader trading as DataSorted, Bartle House, 9 Oxford Court, Manchester M2 3WQ. To get in touch, write to Peter Colburn at that address (by post). We will add an email address once the site has its own domain.
